I test AI for a living and these are the 5 most amazing AI tools of the year

A myriad of transformations can occur within a year, particularly in the realm of technology, and 2023 stands out as no exception. Over the past twelve months, this period has been dubbed the "year of AI," witnessing the revelation of new models, products, and use cases for generative AI that have irreversibly altered the entire tech landscape.

Personally experimenting with an array of artificial intelligence products—from image generators to video production tools—I have explored applications that can create music from a simple text prompt and seamlessly transform one voice into another within seconds.

Despite the deluge of new releases, models, and chatbots, ChatGPT remains my AI app of the year until the capabilities of Google Bard's Gemini Ultra are revealed. GPT-4 continues to outshine other artificial intelligence models by a considerable margin, and here's why.

ChatGPT is not merely an easy and obvious choice; its impact on the entire AI sector makes it the app of the year. Just over a year ago, commercialized generative AI in mainstream products was taking tentative steps. Today, we find chatbots integrated into Windows 11, image generation in Photoshop, and the ability to compose a song from scratch in a web browser—all owing part of their success to ChatGPT.

OpenAI has not rested on its laurels with ChatGPT; it has undergone multiple upgrades over the past year. What was once a research experiment has transformed into a practical and multimodal product. ChatGPT can now describe the contents of a photograph, generate poetry, and even produce an image to complement that poem. Additionally, it introduces a new voice mode for interactive engagements, resembling interactions with virtual assistants like Alexa or Siri but with intelligent responses.

While numerous AI tools emerged in 2023, including noteworthy ones like Otter.ai and various Meta AI tools, a few stood out as genuine standout moments. Runway's Gen-2 impressed with its multimodal video AI model, ElevenLabs showcased human-like voice AI capabilities, MidJourney excelled in hyper-realistic image generation, Claude 2 demonstrated prowess in large-context chat, and StabilityAI's investments in open-source generative AI tools made it a notable contributor to the evolving landscape.

In conclusion, as we look toward the future, the transformative impact of AI models, their responsible development, and the collaborative efforts of companies like StabilityAI will continue to shape the way we interact with technology. The year 2023 has laid the groundwork for a future where AI seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, from generating content to enhancing creative endeavors and fostering meaningful human-computer interactions.
